EPTAHUB Sheet Metal Fabrication Service Overview

Sheet metal fabrication is a subtractive manufacturing process that shapes components from thin metal sheets. Engineers often select sheet metal parts for their high precision and durability, especially for end-use applications such as chassis, enclosures, and brackets.

EPTAHUB's online sheet metal fabrication service provides efficient and cost-effective solutions for parts made from 3D CAD files or engineering drawings. EPTAHUB offers a variety of sheet metal materials, including aluminum alloys, copper, steel, and stainless steel, as well as assembly services (such as installing PEM inserts and welding) and surface finishing services. Leveraging a global network of manufacturing partners, EPTAHUB can meet sheet metal part supply needs of all quantities, from small-batch, multi-variety prototypes to high-volume production runs. For small-batch prototypes, EPTAHUB provides competitive customized quotes; for high-volume production, greater cost savings can be achieved. Notably, prototype quotes include customs duties and standard package shipping costs.

What Is Sheet Metal Forming?

Sheet metal raw materials are purchased in flat sheet form, cut through a series of processing steps, and then formed into the final shape. For a typical sheet metal project, the first step is usually sheet cutting, using shears, laser cutters, waterjet cutters, plasma cutters, or punch presses to process the inner holes and edge features of the part—this process is also known as blanking.

After blanking, the next step is forming the sheet metal using various tools, the most common being a press brake. Press brakes are available in manual and automatic types, using die inserts to achieve the required angle bends and transform 2D sheets into 3D parts. Sheet metal forming allows for multi-directional bending of parts, enabling the production of simple components like brackets and high-complexity geometric parts requiring custom dies. Once the die is installed, the subsequent mass production of sheet metal parts offers excellent cost-effectiveness, making sheet metal fabrication and forming processes ideal for small to large-volume production needs.

Sheet Metal Surface Finish Options Offered By EPTAHUB

Multiple material-surface finish combinations are available through the online sheet metal instant quoting system. If you cannot find your desired material-surface finish combination, select "Other" from the surface finish dropdown menu on the quoting page, and submit a request for professional engineering review after specifying part features, tolerance requirements, inspection needs, and order quantity. View our surface finish case library to see examples of standard surface finish results.

Details Of Various Surface Finishes

Standard Finish

Basic post-processing or simple treatment of parts without additional complex processes.

Sandblasting

Creates a smooth, matte texture on the part surface.

Anodizing (Type II Or Type III)

Type II Anodizing (compliant with MIL-A-8625/MIL-PRF-8625 standards) forms a corrosion-resistant surface layer. Sheet
metal parts can be anodized in various colors, commonly clear, black, red, and gold—this process is typically applied to
aluminum alloys. Type III Anodizing (compliant with MIL-A-8625 standards, Class I/II "Hard Anodizing") has a thicker surface
layer, offering excellent wear resistance in addition to the corrosion resistance of Type II Anodizing.

Chemical Conversion Coating (Chromate Treatment)

This sheet metal surface treatment process imparts corrosion resistance and good electrical conductivity to parts, and can be used as a base coat for painting. Parts have a yellow or gold surface after treatment. The surface layer is extremely thin, approximately 0.00001 in - 0.00004 in, compliant with MIL-DTL-5541 Type I/II standards.

Powder Coating

A surface treatment process in sheet metal fabrication where powder coating is sprayed onto the part surface and cured in an oven. The resulting coating is strong, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant, with better performance than conventional painting processes. Multiple color options are available to meet different appearance needs—see the powder coating surface finish case library for details.

Electroless Nickel Plating

A surface treatment process in sheet metal fabrication that forms a uniform nickel plating on irregular part surfaces, effectively preventing corrosion, oxidation, and wear. Parts have a brighter surface after treatment. The plating thickness starts at 0.0001 in, compliant with MIL-C-26074 standards.

Gold Plating

Gold plating provides parts with excellent corrosion resistance and tarnish resistance, as well as superior solderability. Default application standards are MIL-G-45204 and ASTM B488, covering Grade 00, Grade 0, and Grade 1 (thickness range: 0.00002 in - 0.00005 in).

Silver Plating

Silver plating imparts high solderability and electrical conductivity to parts, but sheet metal part surfaces are prone to tarnish. Compliant with AMS QQ-S-365D standards, plating thickness is approximately 0.00002 in - 0.0003 in.
