Custom Wire EDM Machining With EPTAHUB

EPTAHUB delivers high-quality wire EDM parts in a matter of days, rather than months. Our network comprises hundreds of workshops equipped with wire EDM capabilities, providing you with nearly unlimited capacity to produce both simple and complex parts.

Wire EDM (also known as Electrical Discharge Machining) utilizes a thin single strand of wire. This wire is fed through the workpiece along with deionized water, and it is spooled between two guide rollers that are controlled by the machine's computer system. The process employs electric current to cut away conductive materials from the part, resulting in a smooth surface that typically does not need post-processing. While the process itself is intricate, EPTAHUB's suppliers—including ITAR-registered facilities and those certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016, IATF 16949:2016, and AS9100D—possess high levels of expertise to ensure the job is completed successfully.

Wire EDM Machining Finishes Available

Standard Finish (as-milled)

This finish option offers the fastest turnaround time. Parts retain visible tool marks, and may have sharp edges and burrs;
these can be removed if requested. The surface finish is similar to a 125 uin Ra finish.

Bead Blast

Leaves the part surface with a smooth, matte look.

Tumbled

This is a batch-based process that uses vibrating media to tumble parts, removing sharp edges and burrs from machined components. Tumbling can also eliminate machine marks on the exterior surfaces of parts. Parts exceeding 8 inches in size may require a manual assessment.

Anodized (Type II Or Type III)

Type II:(MIL-A-8625/MIL-PRF-8625, Type II) forms a corrosion-resistant finish. Parts can be anodized in various colors—clear, black, red, and gold are the most common—and this finish is usually associated with aluminum.

Type III:(MIL-A-8625/MIL-PRF-8625, Type III, Class 1/2 "hardcoat") is thicker and provides a wear-resistant layer in addition to the corrosion resistance offered by Type II.

Titanium Anodize

A surface finish designed for titanium in accordance with the AMS-2488 Type 2 specification. Also referred to as Tiodize, this finish enhances the fatigue strength and wear resistance of a part. Titanium anodized parts are widely used in aerospace and medical device manufacturing. Non-pigmented titanium anodize finishes will reduce the part's shine.

PTFE Impregnated Hard Anodize

A hard coat anodize process that embeds PTFE to create a self-lubricating, dry-contact surface, while maintaining the
protective properties of Type 3 hard coat. This finish can be applied to aluminum alloys or titanium, and it extends the
product's service life. It complies with the AMS-2482 Type 1 Hard Coat Anodizing with Teflon (Non-Dyed) standard.

Chem Film

Provides corrosion resistance and excellent conductivity. It can be used as a base for paint applications. May leave the
surface with a yellow or gold hue. Adds minimal thickness, approximately 0.00001” to 0.00004”. Chem film meets the
requirements of MIL-DTL-5541, TYPE I/II.

Passivation

Enhances corrosion resistance for 200 and 300 series steels, as well as precipitation-hardened corrosion-resistant steels.
The thickness added is negligible, around 0.0000001”. Complies with standards such as ASTM A967, AMS-QQ-P-35,
MIL-STD-171, ASTM A380, or AMS 2700.

Powder Coat

In this process, powdered paint is sprayed onto the part, which is then baked in an oven. This creates a strong layer that is
resistant to wear and corrosion, and it is more durable than traditional painting methods. A wide range of colors is available
to achieve the desired aesthetic appearance.

Electropolishing

An electrochemical process that cleans steel parts, reducing corrosion and improving their appearance by making the metal
brighter. Removes roughly 0.0001” to 0.0025” of the metal's surface. Complies with ASTM B912-02.

Electroless Nickel Plating

Provides a uniform nickel coating that protects against corrosion, oxidation, and wear on irregular surfaces. The finished
part has a brighter appearance. The coating thickness starts at 0.0001”. Meets the MIL-C-26074 standard.

Silver Plating

Silver offers high solderability and electrical conductivity but is prone to tarnishing. Complies with AMS QQ-S-365D. The
thickness ranges from approximately 0.00002” to 0.0003”.

Gold Plating

Gold plating provides excellent corrosion and tarnish resistance, along with superior solderability. The default application
specification follows MIL-G-45204 and ASTM B488, CLASS 00, 0, or 1. The thickness is about 0.00002" to 0.00005".

Zinc Plating

Delivers a uniform zinc coating that protects against corrosion, oxidation, and wear on irregular surfaces. Complies with
ASTM B633-15.
